Moyenne Island in the Seychelles has officially been decreed a National Park. The event was commemorated with a ceremony last Friday, the birthday of the treaty signed between Brendon Grimshaw, the owner of the island since 1962, and Joel Morgan, the Minister of the Environment, Natural Resources and Transport. According to this treaty, the entire island has been turned into a National Park.
Present at the event were, except for the two parties that had been signing the treaty last year, the Principal Secretary of the Environment Didier Dogley, as well as the members of the Moyenne Island Foundation.
Actually more than 16,000 plants exist on Moyenne Island, 45 of them are endemic species which have been take there and planted by Brendon Grimshaw and his special friend, the late Rene Lafoarrivée more than 35 years ago. The island moreover is a sanctuary for more than 40 endemic palm tree species including 13 cocos de mer, as well as hundreds of giant turtles and a great variety of rare birds.
The island has thus, with the passing of time, turned into a very beautiful nature reserve; as one could learn from an article published by daily paper Seychelles Nation. The signing of the documents was the final act to declare that Moyenne Island has become a National Park as from the 22nd of May.
According to the Minister of the Environment and with regards to nature conservation, this date will go down in history in the Seychelles,.
A visit of the island is free for the Seychellois, whereas tourists are asked to contribute a fee of 10 Euros.
